It's very simple, actually.
Victor Milan rehashed Team Phoenix from his long dead Guardian's series, and brought it into Mark Ellis' Outlanders.
Maybe it was an attempt from Mr. Milan to inspire Gold Eagle to give these wannabes from the 80's a series of their own, maybe it was a slap in Mark's face, trying to one-up him, who knows. It could have been anything.
Fact of the matter is that they shouldn't have been brought in. The very first book that Mr. Milan wrote for Outlanders had this new 'team' center stage, with the regular characters taking a step back for them.
When you're a guest writer, and in this case it was a guest writer, you don't come in and start messing around with the creators series, to suit it to your personal taste. That was very crass and down right disrespectful.
It angered a lot of the fans, and the creator of the series felt that they had no place in his personal sandbox, so he got rid of them, pure and simple. Being Mark created the series and wrote at this point in time over 44 of the books in it, the vast lion's share, he had every right to do so.
After all, you don't come into someone's house, walk around, eat their food, dirty their rooms and start changing things around without first asking now, do you?
That's why they were taken out.
